Travel may be claimable
SIRA states that workers can claim travel to attend medical, hospital and rehabilitation appointments when the expense is reasonably necessary. Travel arrangements and reimbursement should be confirmed with the insurer managing the claim.
Records to keep
- Appointment date and provider
- Starting point and destination
- Kilometres travelled in a private vehicle
- Public-transport tickets or receipts
- Taxi or rideshare receipts if authorised
- Written insurer approval where required
Ask before arranging costly travel
SIRA advises that travel costs generally require insurer pre-approval. Check before arranging a taxi, long-distance trip, accommodation or an escort. The insurer may ask whether a closer suitable provider or another reasonable option is available.
Escort expenses
Where an escort is necessary for an approved treatment or service, reasonable fares, travel costs and maintenance may also be claimable. The insurer should confirm whether the escort and proposed costs are approved.
How to submit the claim
Ask the insurer for its current travel-expense form or preferred process. Submit the requested records and keep a copy. The clinic can confirm appointment attendance but does not decide whether travel reimbursement is payable.
